Function & Use
- Purpose: To access the medullary cavity of bones (commonly the iliac crest or sternum) for marrow aspiration or biopsy.
Procedure:
- The cannula is inserted through the skin and soft tissue into the bone.
- Once positioned, the stylet is removed, and a syringe is attached to aspirate marrow.
- In biopsy procedures, the cannula may be rotated to capture a core sample.

Bone Marrow Biopsy Needle are available with or without a marrow extraction cannula. The former is aimed at ensuring a quality specimen by collecting & holding the bone marrow in the needle cannula without using the painful needle deflection technique or altering the sample's architecture. This increases patient comfort, reduces the risk of a lost sample, and improves the quality of the specimen.
